Element 2 – Annotations

Audio

Expanding upon the original idea in order to meet the aims of the brief proved slightly challenging. Initially my proposed dialogue was longer than the 120 second limit and so I needed to go over the initial script.

Choosing which non-diegetic sounds to fit into the content was difficult at first but I thought stereotypical French music might help the listener fully imagine and immerse themselves with the topic of discussion. To improve, I could have possibly added more sounds to better characterise the environment such as the common sound of trains or the doors closing warning when discussing the metro.

Video Production

My video short features footage of both myself and the scenery of the Camden neighbourhood. The majority of audio is composed of a monologue however I am able to include some additional sounds such as Amy Winehouse’s Tears Dry On Their Own and a clever embedding of diegetic sound into my speech.

To consolidate and better demonstrate the teachings, I think the usage of more fluid camera work within scenes might’ve helped showcasing the neighbourhood in a more professional light.

Creative Writing

Taking my hobby of language learning, I thought the best way to break down the poem would be contextualise each language that I have or am learning. I weaved in relevant quotes from authors and activists whose work is pertinent to the sections they appear in. Usage of foreign language terms and phrases is an influence of Lil Kim’ who in her music has included foreign languages to allow her message to resonate even further. Examples of this can be heard with Drugs with Arabic and No Time with Patois.

Something to strengthen this piece could have been a relevant artistic inspiration for each language.

Web Content Creation

For my set of three posters I decided to show a range of African cuisines with personal photography. Having these in the largest image draws attention to the food first. Then, each poster features cultural markers for each country. For Ghana the dish shown is attiéké with kelewele and the markers around are an adowa dancer, adinkra symbols and Independence Arch. Ethiopia has a plate of injera and kitfo in the centre, with a range of sauces surrounding. Relevant cultural images include an eskista dancer, ge’ez script and St. George Cathedral. Finally, the dish for the Democratic Republic of Congo is kwanga with poulet mayo and the poster also contains a traditional Bakongo dancer with kuba cloth and a statue commemorating the historical Kingdom of Loango. Each poster’s colour palette also features the national flag to give further clues for those who may not be privy to the imagery.

The message when unified is “Expand your Horizons” which is think is fitting when showcasing foreign cuisines. I used a sans serif font, Impact, to make the message even more commanding against a warm orange backdrop fitting into colour theory. I feel as though the choices in supporting images work well in illustrating the material and immaterial heritage of country.
